It is strangely liberating having no money. I’m lucky because I can say that from a position of little responsibility. I have no dependants. Two weeks ago I moved away from home. It’s not for the first time, but the first time was University. Whilst living back at home I had almost no expenses. I could have used that period to really pay off some debts. I managed to pay off my maxed-out credit card, in fact – but they just upped the limit threefold and I am once again maxed out. This will be a tough month, financially – but from now on in general I’m going to have to be more money-conscious – and perversely I’m looking forward to it.

I ran out of money entirely at University several times over. I found it was a load-off, and it taught me that you can, in fact, live very cheaply. If I managed to live the same way when I did have money then I think I’d manage to save pretty effectively – so that is the challenge. I mean, one day if I do have dependants some savings are probably going to come in handy and provide some peace of mind.
